Our Thoughts:

Overall very pleased with our video, we feel we kept it interesting throughout the whole 3 minutes with lots of variety of shots/angles and the fast paced editing worked well with the beat. We didn't really stick to our original plan of having a story of the Gorilla escaping because we found our performance footage really strong and thought it was a shame to lose lots of it. Therefore we ended up with more performance footage with only other kind of footage being in the instrumental.

We felt that just having footage of the gorilla going around playing pranks on people and screaming would get a bit boring for the viewer, so we deciced to have a part within the video where the gorilla plays interments and have a part with thomas not having the mask on lip syncing to the song( this would get us more marks if we have lip syncing in the video).
this video from last year pop in to our head and we thort it would be very good to recreate due to its success last year.

Thoughts on the Roughcut

We need more footage, but we are happy with some of the skating footage we already have. We are likely to get rid of some of the stuff in the rough cut as a lot of it was test-footage and we feel we can put better footage in its place. This new footage will be around town, and will be much stronger. In terms of editing we need to put effects in, make cuts quicker and more in time with the music. This will increase the pace of our video, make it more exciting and visually interesting. We could bounce footage in and out, have close ups of peoples reactions and tie this in with quick cuts. To make things stand out more we intend on colour correcting some of the footage. Also we used two cameras to film and the colour of the footage doesn't quite match so some colour correction will also solve this problem. We also plan on having performance footage and mixing this in with the other footage of our gorilla. This will make our video look more like a music video. Overall we are happy with the rough cut and it gave us a good idea of what we need to do.

We like how the closeup shots of the the band during the video gives it a classic indie look, however this is not something we want to achieve in our video.

We also really liked some of the abstract and unusual touches thay used such as the exit sign scrolling across the screen and the shot which looked as if they were being filmed by CCTV. We might have abstract shots in our instumental part of our video, and also try out the CCTV idea. Another thing we noticed were the wide variety and the amazing quality of the shots used. This really inspired us to be imaginative and outgoing when shooting our video.

Band Research

We have been unable to find any information on our band, as they do not have a myspace/facebook/anything of any use. This may be because there name isn't big enough yet and therefore nothing has been written about them.

These are some of the dvd's that the monkey will be picking up and looking at in hmv, as you can see they either have a jungle or a monkey theme.

We thort that the monkey could have some popcorn for the scene in the cinema, we are not quite sure what he will do with it but we imagen he will be throwing it around at some point.

we will be using a skate board for the skating scene at jesus green skate park, the monkey will be doing tricks and stunts with it.

we will be using a car for the monkey to escape from the zoo area, the real car wont be a cartoon.

we havnt quite decided if we will be using beers and whisky in the video but if we do the monkey will be getting very drunk and will be doing even more stupid things whilst drunk.

as the main character is a monkey we will be using a lot of bananas, we dont no at this point how many bananas will be needed because we dont no what scenes we will be having them in, but we will need quite alot of them.

both video's are montages of an experience that one person is going through. each shot is short and have quick cuts. they both show the point of view of the main character of the video and how they feel about whats going on, it kind of gives the viewer the feeling that they are also in this situation. this is what we aim to do in our video, we feel it will draw the view in more and what to keep watching and keep them interested!

Our Animatic

The animatic shows the opening of our music video. This section primarily shows our Gorillas escape from the Zoo, and hijacking a car and eventually visiting the nearby town. It will be humerous, especially when the car is stolen as a man is loading his shopping in a boot. It will come as a surprise when it is apparent the Gorilla stoke the car with two children seatbelted in the back looking very scared when the car is eventually left abandoned. There is lyrics in this opening section and therefore we will have cut shots to our singer singing. This opening sequence brings us bascially to the instrumental part of the music track, where the Gorilla will be in town.

Jurassic 5 - We know Something

This music video primarily uses the idea of people in costumes, it has no lip sinc and instead keeps the audiences attention by entertaining us with street dancing and other comical elements such as large costumed characters pretend rapping and driving cars.

The genre of the video is Rap, therefore it is quite fast paced, and the editing done reflects this with quick cuts, with shots not held very long. The cuts are straight cuts, there are no transitions except from at the beginning where they fade the first 3 shots. The visuals fit in with the culture of rap/hip-hop because the characters break dance, play basketball and do rapping hand movements. The visuals match the genre of rap music.

In this video the director has not tried to promote the artist because they are never seen in the video, instead there place has been taken by dressed up people in animal costumes pretending to rap the song. The audience therefore never see the band.

In terms of mise-en-scene the whole video is filmed on a street location. No studio or green screen has been used. The mise-en-scene is very basic, it appears to be filmed in Miami, near the beach on a summers day. The main focus of the video is clearly the dressed up characters who have been choreographed very well with many dance routines.

In key moments of the video(break dancing and basket ball bit) they have used slow motion, we think they have done this because they want the viewer to really focus on whats happening.

This video has given us ideas on how to plan for our own video because we also are using a costumed character and we feel this video has used street locations very well. The video makes the audience focus on the character and we wish to achieve this is our video also. This video, however, did not have a clear narrative, whereas our video is revolved around a short narrative about our Gorilla character.

Student Video

This is a student video we found that had used similar ideas to the ones we have, such as the use of costumes, interacting with the general public, causing mischief and making people laugh by generally embarrassing themselves. It works well despite its spontaneous nature and narrative. We can certainly use this video as a starting point for ours, and expand on some of the ideas it has.

The mise-en-scene of the video is simple as it has all been filmed in Cambridge. They have filmed in street environment in the busy town areas where there were lots of people for them to interact with and get reactions off. We will be filming similar footage to fill the instrumental part of our track.

In this video they have combined stop-motion footage with real-time footage. The stop-motion footage we feel changes the pace of the video and doesn't quite work. The shots are edited together with quick cuts, there is no real interesting transitions. Some video effects they have used include slowing down motion, and reversing the action.

There track had no words, so it was all instrumental and therefore there was no lip sync. They however, did manage to fill the track with lots of interesting spontaneous footage for the full 3 minutes. There isn't any major props, apart from the costumes. They also used a self-made sign saying the track name, which seemed to work despite the song not having any lyrics.

Jackass Monkey Video

When we first thought of the idea of a gorilla in the music video this is what came to mind....

As you can see, all they are doing is running around doing stupid stuff in a gorilla costume. We are going to expand on this idea and make a narrative for our video so that is based more around a structure.

We are planning to give our Gorilla many different situations, such as skate boarding, going in to a cafe, cinema and supermarket etc but we also see scope for spontaneous footage whilst filming out on location that we perhaps couldn't have planned for, and therefore these could be made into a montage of clips, which could work very effectively in the minutes worth of instrumental in our track.

Our Pitch

Our initial idea was to have a guy in a gorilla costume wondering the streets entertaining people and interacting with the public in comical ways. This would also involve causing some slight mischief and relying on the public to find it amusing and therefore capturing there reactions on video. We however did not have much of a structure to the idea and therefore had to work our brains to think harder how we could make the idea work and not become boring and receive audience criticism after the first minute.

Since this initial idea we therefore expanded on the key ideas of it and broke down the music track to help us create sections in our video. We have now decided to show a guy in a gorilla costume escaping a zoo (first section) and trying to live a 'normal' human life, doing everyday human things such as: eating in a cafe, going to the cinema, riding a skateboard/bike, shopping and walking around a town interacting with other people (second section). The journey for the gorilla guy will start of very lively and happy but by the end he's tired and misses his gorilla friends and realizes life outside his cage inst all that great, so he therefore returns to the zoo (third section. This more expanded idea gives us a better structure to our video rather then us relying on a more spontaneous approach to work well.

Amongst the cuts of our gorilla doing all the different things we will have cuts to stylistic shots of a band/or a single singer singing the song. These are likely to be in black and white to contrast them from the other shots. Our singer is likely to be in a gorilla costume also, but holding the head in his hands instead and then we have an idea of bringing him into the colour shots at the end and have him returning to the zoo as if he was the escaped gorilla all along.

As a group our first problem came very early on when one of our members left the group and therefore left us with only two people. As only two guys were left it meant a lot of the tracks given to us were automatically ruled out because they were by female singers. We therefore took a long time to decide on one of the tracks out of the 13 given to us because we could not think of any initial ideas for any of the tracks. Despite this, we however slowly narrowed the choices down as we listened to the tracks more and more and got an idea of the different lyrics. After a lot of discussion we settled on track 13 realizing that its lyrics worked for an idea we had.
